The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are only months away, so with this in mind, Bury Sport and Physical Activity Service is reaching out to local businesses, charities, groups, clubs and individuals who are planning an event this year to get involved and become part of the UK’s Olympic celebrations.

You can link your London 2012-inspired event or activity to local Cultural Olympiad campaign, ‘Bury be part of it’. This means that you will become part of a campaign that wants to create a lasting Olympic legacy for Bury.

By adopting the brand of ‘Bury be part of it’, you will get help in promoting your forthcoming event and have access to the campaign’s materials and downloads. In addition, you’ll get tips and advice from event guidance documents, ‘Organising an event – a good practice guide.’ Plus, if you want to hold an event on Bury Council-owned land, such as a park or public space, you can apply to the Council for use.

Rawtenstall’s Valley Centre to be demolished to make way for an interim public space

Having bought the Valley Centre in Rawtenstall in November 2011, Rossendale Council’s Development Control Committee passed plans this month to demolish the dilapidated shopping centre and landscape the area to create a public realm and events space in its place.

Although the majority of locals have welcomed the demolition of what was generally regarded as an eyesore, the plans have caused controversy in the area, with many residents apprehensive at the prospect of the council creating a public space in Rawtenstall’s conservation area. Rossendale Council has been quick to point out that this is an interim measure whilst a suitable development is identified.

Rossendale Civic Society secretary, Cathy Fishwick commented, “The council is very lucky to gain permission from the English Heritage Society in a conservation area to knock down a building and not have to immediately replace it... Finally, it is clear that we all have to be in this project together to make sure Rawtenstall does not get another half baked, incomplete scheme.”

The purchase of Valley Centre has been shrouded with controversy from the start; it was purchased after the council voted to redirect money that was initially borrowed to build a new swimming pool in Haslingden. When the news broke, protestors gathered at several council meetings in an attempt to change councillors’ minds but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The council is planning on working with local community groups to gain new ideas and inspiration for local events to be held in the space, such as temporary public art displays and a raised community garden area, which will feature a selection of vegetable, fruit and flower beds.

Bolton is getting into the Olympic spirit with a year-long program of sporting-themed events

To millions of people, 2012 means the Olympics, and Bolton is getting in on the sporting act after the council has designated it as a ‘Year of Sport’.

This will see a year-long program of activities and sporting events to link in with a huge year of UK Sport and allow residents of all ages an opportunity to get involved at local level with sports, celebrations, events and activities.

The activities will cater for all sporting abilities with events ranging from taster sessions for beginners to elite competitions for more accomplished athletes. Bolton will also form a part of the build-up to the London Olympics as the first overnight stop in the Greater Manchester leg of the Olympic torch relay which will see the symbolic flame touring the country.

Launched on 26^th of January at the Reebok Stadium by Wanderers players Kevin Davies and Fabrice Muamba who joined councilors Noel Spencer and Cliff Morris, the Year of Sport also includes the National Badminton Championships, the English Schools Cross Country Cup, and the Bolton School’s Summer Games.

The town centre will also host the UK leg of the international ‘Ironman’ event, for the fourth year running.

The activities will surround the opening of the town’s new purpose built, £31m health and leisure facility – developed by Bolton Council, the University of Bolton and NHS Bolton – Bolton One.

“Bolton is proud of its sporting heritage and continues to invest in sport at a grassroots level” said councilor Cliff Morris. “The UK has an exciting year ahead, full of sport and celebration and here in Bolton the council is making sure the town and its residents join the party.

“That’s why we’ve developed the Year of Sport to join together existing events, as well as creating new ones just for this year that will encourage all ages – but especially young people – to get involved in sport and improve their fitness, well-being and overall health.

“Hopefully the Bolton Council Year of Sport will also be the moment for some young people when they will get into sport for the first time and, who knows, we could create a few Olympic stars of the future as a result!”

Bury residents may see council tax freeze

It can be rare these days to get anything resembling good financial news, but residents of Bury could receive just that with the news that the council is set to recommend a freeze on council tax for the 2012/13 year.

Should the plans be approved, it will be the second year running that the council has ratified the 0% rise, but the proposers of the freeze could face a fight to get it through.

A special council meeting will be held in February where they will propose the new budget which includes this 0% increase will take place, but it comes against a backdrop of budget cuts and a plan to save.

This is because the proposal comes shortly after the council completed a ‘Plan for Change’ consultation which aims to describe the council’s spending plans for the next three years, despite having to cut back £18 million on spending.

And whilst last year there was a grant from the government to councils who froze tax, there have been no such promises this time.

The public are welcome to attend this special meeting to ask questions of those present. It will take place at Bury Town hall at 7.00pm on Wednesday 22^nd February.

Council leader Mike Connolly, said: "These are tough economic times, with people losing their jobs and salaries being cut, and high inflation eating away the little money they have.

"We feel that the council should do what it can to help residents, rather than add to their financial worries. So, despite the massive grants cuts imposed by the Government on Bury, we think that the council tax should be frozen for next year."

Olympic Torch to travel through our region

Red Rose Directories’ businesses and readers have not one, but two chances to witness the spectacle of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

It will be travelling through Westhoughton and Bolton on May 31^st, and revisits the area on Saturday 23^rd June, making its way through Blackburn, Crawshawbooth, Reedsholme, Rawtenstall, Bury and Higher Broughton, just outside Salford.

To celebrate this once-in-a–lifetime event, Bolton will be holding an evening Olympic Torch celebration on May 31^st. Torchbearers will carry the Olympic flame into Queen’s Park, where local residents will be invited to celebrate its arrival. Bolton Council will disclose more information about the event in due course, so keep visit the Red Rose Directories blog to keep up to date.

On June 1^st, the torch will be carried through the town centre before leaving Bolton on its way further north to Chorley, before making its way down to Ormskirk.

However, if you happen to miss the sight of the Olympic torch visiting Bolton, you still have another opportunity to see it travelling through Blackburn, Rawtenstall, Rochdale and Bury as it nears Manchester.

Bury Council is looking for your input for its ‘Core Strategy’, which will plan and set out the long term vision for the development of the borough for the next decade and a half.

When the strategy has been finalised, it will become a key document in attracting investment in development and will also be used in determining planning applications.

It will set out how much development the borough will need to accommodate for things such as housing, employment and retail, areas where development will not be encouraged, as well as establishing policies on community facilities, environmental issues, recreation and transport.

But if you want to play your part in these vital decisions for your town, you need to act fast as the comments will only be accepted for another two days.

Christmas is a time for giving, so why not give the environment a bit of a gift by taking care to recycle all of the rubbish that accumulates at this time of year?

From throwing away unwanted food to putting your Christmas tree to good use, your local council will be giving you all the support you need to recycle everything to minimise waste.

Food Waste

In most areas, waste food can be recycled for composting. But before you get to that, why not look up some tips on how to reduce the amount of food you waste in the first place? Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for some useful hints and tips.

Cards and Wrapping Paper

As long as they don’t have laminate or foil, then all paper products such as Christmas cards and wrapping paper can be recycled. Alternatively, why not have a look to see if your favourite charity is running a card recycling scheme?

Christmas Trees

More than 250 tonnes of Christmas trees are thrown away every year in the UK, and all of these could be recycled! You can put your Christmas tree in your composting recycling bin alternatively, trees are also often collected by local charities. Bolton Hospice is on example, and they will collect your tree from you (for a £7.50 donation), saving you all of the effort as well as helping a good cause.

Bolton residents warned against businesses offering to reduce council tax

Christmas can be expensive, so the temptation to try and save money elsewhere can be pressing.

But companies who claim that they may be able to obtain a reduction in your council tax may only be offering a service that you can perform yourself for free.

Bolton Council’s Trading Standards Officers have found some of the businesses who have been cold calling residents in the area to be misleading, whilst not actually illegal.

These companies call residents to suggest that they may be overcharged on council tax and offer to apply to the Valuation Office Agency on their behalf for a rebate – sometimes charging £150, or 25% of any settlement.

But applications to the VOA can be made free of charge by anyone.

Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Housing and Skills, Councillor Ismail Ibrahim, said: “If anyone thinks they are entitled to a refund they can ask the VOA to review their circumstances free of charge. Staff at the VOA are happy to advise residents on the process before they embark on an application.

“Any company offering this service should make it very clear that they are a private company and not affiliated to the council. They should also explain that there is no guarantee an application will be successful and that the service is free if an individual contacts the VOA themselves.”

Anyone who feels they have been misled by a company offering to obtain a reduction in council tax should report the matter to Trading Standards on 0845 404 0506.

Businesses in Bolton to help long-term unemployed get back to work

In September 2011, the rate of people in Bolton claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance was over 8,200, up by over 100 people the month before, and this figure is rising.

However, a new initiative has been launched to halt these increasing numbers of unemployed people in our area, with Bolton businesses being asked to help.

The drive is being led by UK training specialist, Avanta, which currently deals with more than 600 jobless people in Bolton who are in need of special help. Based at Knowsley House in the centre of Bolton, many of the people Avanta assist are referred from job centres, although individuals are able to voluntarily refer themselves to the organisation. Advice and specialist support are available for people on disability or incapacity benefits, those with health needs and others who need extra help with writing CVs and developing interview skills.

Avanta has recently been awarded a government contract to carry out a ‘Work Programme’ – a scheme that is designed to get people in Bolton and the local area off benefits and into meaningful employment.

Avanta held an open day in which it invited businesses to find out more about its efforts and approach to getting the long-term unemployed successfully re-enter the workplace. The organisation’s manager, Joel Payne explains:

“Anyone who has been on benefits for a long time will be referred to the Work Programme. We are working with organisations including Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Job Serve, the Probation Service and the Mental Health Intervention Support Team. We also have a number of firms alongside us, such as Windowplas and Unique Windows, and we’re keen to work with more employers in Bolton.”

Mr Payne went on to explain the difficulties that people face when moving from benefits to employment and Avanta’s commitment to help them stay and thrive in their new role, including enrolling them in educational courses to provide them with the skills they need.

“It’s good to hear something different to the usual stereotypical stories about unemployed people being ‘lazy’ or there ‘being no jobs’. The reality is much more complicated. We’ve got local employers who are willing to give people a chance — especially those who have a gap in their skills — and we want to expand this great work.”

This festive season, as you are thinking about what gifts you are hoping to give, and what you would love to receive, why not offer another gift – something more precious than presents under the tree – blood.

Giving blood saves lives; it’s as simple as that. One litre of blood can help up to three people who are in need. These could be mothers in childbirth, babies, children or indeed anyone involved in an accident or undergoing an operation.

Donated blood is a crucial cornerstone of the healthcare system in this country, and almost 8,000 transfusions are carried out every day. With that much needed on a daily basis, it’s easy to see how important these donations are.

Currently only about 4% of the population are blood donors – that’s about a million and a half people making more than two million donations a year. And the stocks need to be replenished constantly as blood only has a shelf life of a little over a month.

It can sound a little frightening if you have never done it before, but the friendly, helpful staff will make sure you are relaxed, and they only take a fraction of the blood flowing in your body. And blood is very quickly replaces. And no, don’t worry – it really doesn’t hurt!

This Christmas, why not take up the opportunity to really do some good, and with a cup of tea and a biscuit at the end, what’s not to like?

Christmas might be just around the corner, but Santa is giving some members of his team a day off this week and they will be making an appearance at St Paul’s Church on Bridge Street.

The last Ramsbottom Christmas Market takes place in Ramsbottom Civic Hall this weekend, on Sunday 18^th December and Santa’s Sleigh will be there along with some of his magical reindeer. As well as getting your picture taken before they fly off around the world, there will also be a petting pen so you can ask them to put in a good word with the boss!

There will also be the chance to adopt a baby reindeer with raffle tickets on sale in participating shops, with a first prize being a camping and fishing trip to Tarvin Sands and other prizes such as local gift vouchers and a cuddly penguin on offer!

The Craft and Food market, which begins at 10.30 and runs through until 4.00pm, will give you a last chance to stock up the fridge with some fantastic hand-made festive foods as well as getting your hands on some lovingly made last minute gifts.

But there are plenty of ways to prevent – or at least minimise – the number of times you need to get the vac out.

Buy fresh

If you are buying a cut tree with no roots, then the later the better. There are plenty of Garden Centres with trees for sale, so look around for one that looks newly cut and still healthy. You can check this by running your fingers along a low branch. If the needles come away, avoid it!

Store carefully

If you have a few days before it’s going up, try and leave it in a cool, dry place, out of the wind and in a bucket of water so it can have a really good drink. But also try and keep it out of sight as Christmas Trees can and have been stolen!

Water well

Before you put it up indoors, use a saw to chop the bottom inch or so off the trunk. This opens up the pores in the bark and helps the tree drink the water you give it throughout Christmas. It will need up to three pints of water a day depending on how big it is, and how close to heat it is. Try and keep them away from direct heat, so not too close to the fire!

There are, of course, other alternatives to the old cut tree.

Go live

Buy a tree that has roots and it in a pot. If you are lucky enough to have a garden, this can live outside through the year and you bring it in for the festive period. This way, not only do you limit needles dropping on the floor, but the same tree can last you many years.

Go fake

The other obvious option, fake trees look better than they have ever done. Some even look just like real trees if you want to spend the right money. These will last you a lifetime, need minimal clearing up and, for those with allergies to pine sap, won’t bring you out in blotches!

Salford schools set for major refurbishment

St Ambrose Barlow Roman Catholic High School, St Patrick’s Roman Catholic High School and Moorside High and Moorside Primary School will all benefit from the ‘Building Schools for the Future Programme’ to the tune of £70m of investment.

The deal is part of the Salford and Wigan Local Education Partnership – which has already delivered two new schools to the city, with a third set to open next year and will see both a new maintenance agreement as well as new buildings for the three schools, to create learning environments suitable for the 21^st century.

This will see additional opportunities and a greater range of services for almost 3,000 primary and high school students in the region as a part of a wider scheme which will see more than £150m invested in local education.

This is the second phase of the SWLEP, which has already seen major investment at Walkden High School and Irlam & Caddishead College, both completed earlier this year, whilst Oasis Academy, Media City is set to open in September 2012.

Stephen Hockaday, Director of the Transformational Learning Partnership consortium explained: “We are creating facilities with the capacity to transform the life-chances of children in Salford. The educational understanding arising from the close working partnership between ourselves, Salford City Council and the Schools means that the facilities are designed to help each child reach their individual potential and will be at the heart of the local community.”

Are you looking after your eyesight?

Do you sometimes struggle to read the phone number on the TV to vote for your favourite act on X Factor, or perhaps you can’t tell the 3 from the 8 at a football match? When was the last time you tried to read a number plate from the 20 metres that the DVLA require to pass your driving test?

Recent research has suggested that nearly two million people in the UK are living with sight loss, and for many, especially children, this has gone undiagnosed. And this is a figure on the increase.

All too often, people wait for the realisation that their eyesight is failing when something similar to the examples above happens to them and the idea of glasses becomes more appealing than the idea of losing their eyesight.

But vision usually declines over a period of time, often years, which means people are spending a lot of their lives with eyesight which is not perfect, but could be with a simple visit to a healthcare provider that you find on any high street.

Why wait until you or a member of your family decides that enough is enough and they need to do something about their vision? Taking the family to the optician can improve safety behind the wheel as well as helping children at school.

Up to one million schoolchildren are estimated to have eyesight issues which can lead to difficulties with their studies. All for the lack of an eye test which, for kids, is absolutely free.

And did you know that opticians might also help diagnose other health issues? Research in the US has shown that several chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and even brain tumours or high cholesterol can be spotted by the optician.

Opticians are available on any high street in any town in Lancashire, and the days of NHS specs are long gone (unless you are after some Jarvis Cocker chic, of course!) so why wait until something goes wrong when you could be enjoying perfect vision?

Are you doing your bit for your elderly neighbours this winter?

With the nights drawing in and the first frost of the year already reported in some areas, winter is certainly on the way. And with the last two years seeing some of the harshest winters on record, there is a chance that we could be reaching double figures in minus temperatures again this year.

At the same time, fuel bills and food costs are rising which has led to some elderly people worrying about how to pay their bills. There is a real risk of some vulnerable people feeling that they have to choose between food and fuel. Heating or eating.

Research suggests that more than a third of pensioners have this fear, and it will certainly contribute to the horrific figures that more than 25,000 older people could die this year due to the cold and cold related illnesses. Many of these are entirely preventable.

Help the Aged and Age Concern merged in 2009 to form Age UK, a charity which supports the elderly in all aspect of life, but they are especially crucial at this time of year. The charity offer grants for vulnerable elderly people to help them with their winter bills, and their comfort – or even survival – over the winter could depend on something as simple as knowing about this possibility.

Having prior knowledge of severe cold snaps could also save lives, so whilst older people are beginning to use the internet more and more, why not keep a check on the weather and give them a warning if it’s going to be a particularly cold night.

And there is plenty more you can do to support an older person in your community. Why not nip around to see how they are. Or better yet, invite them around for a cup of tea and a chat, or even a hot meal.

And of course you can support your local Age UK shop where they raise vital funds to protect the elderly at this particularly difficult time of year.

Don’t miss out – make sure you know the last postal dates for Christmas

It's the middle of November and already the first Christmas cards have begun to drop onto doormats.

However, not everyone is that organised (or some might say over-eager!) to get the cards written and in the post. But the last thing you want is a blind panic when it dawns on you that the last posting day is upon you. Missing one date isn't the end of the world, but the later it gets, the more expensive it is.

UK Delivery Dates

Of course, the cheapest option for cards is a simple second class. But remember, these need to be sent by December 17th. Miss this and you'll need to shell out a little more for first class - as long as you are sent by the 20th.

After this, you have only got the two Special Delivery options - and with Christmas Eve on a Saturday this year, if you miss the 22nd deadline for Special Delivery you will have to pay extra for Saturday delivery.

You run the same risk for leaving it late with parcels and presents. 14^th of December is the deadline there, but if you do miss the date, you can have a backup of the two Parcelforce Express options where your final chances are the 21^st and 22^nd. But again, these will cost more.

International Postage Deadlines

There’s less back-up for international mail. If you miss out, then it’s pretty much tough luck (unless you really want to push the boat out with a courier service!) The deadline for the cheapest option of Surface Mail has long gone now so it’s airmail or nothing. And this is different depending on where the items are going.

For everywhere bar Europe and the USA then you must have the post in by December 5th. After that the deadline for US, Canada and Eastern Europe is the 9th and the 12^th December 2011 for Western Europe.

Forces

The North West is home to over 2000 regular armed forces; with many of these in the Duke of Lancaster’s regiment, there are also dozens of Navy ship visits a year.

So there are plenty of people in the region looking to send post to loved ones overseas. The BFPO has two deadlines; the 5th of December for operational and 12^th for static. These cards, letters and parcels might well be the most important you send, so don’t miss the deadlines!

Of course, all of these dates are the latest possible. There’s nothing stopping you sending your cards and presents earlier and avoiding the rush.

Now's the time to bake that Christmas Cake!

Christmas, believe it or not, is only just around the corner and that means that you need to think about some of your preparations.

If you like to make your own Christmas cake then you’ll need to be thinking about that now as it will need to mature for about six weeks before the day.

You might have a traditional family recipe that has been passed down over the years, or this might be the first time you’ve ever tried to make one. Why not give our Christmas cake recipe a go?

Ingredients:

1 lb (450 g) currants,

6 oz (175 g) sultanas, 6 oz (175 g) raisins,

2 oz (50 g) mixed candied peel, finely chopped

2 oz (50 g) glacé cherries, rinsed, dried and finely chopped,

3 tablespoons brandy, plus extra for 'feeding'

8 oz (225 g) plain flour

¼ level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

½ level teaspoon ground mixed spice

½ level teaspoon salt

8 oz (225 g) soft brown sugar

8 oz (225 g) unsalted butter

4 large eggs

2 oz (50 g) almonds, chopped (the skins can be left on)

1 level dessertspoon black treacle

Grated zest 1 lemon

Grated zest 1 orange

4 oz (110 g) whole blanched almonds (if you are not icing the cake)

Method:

The dried fruit and candied peel need to be soaked in brandy overnight, so mix them up well in and leave them overnight in a covered bowl.

The next day, preheat the oven to a low heat, gas mark 1, 275°F (140°C) and prepare an eight inch tin by greasing it and lining it with greaseproof paper.

Beat the eggs and whisk the butter and sugar together until it has a fluffy consistency, then add the eggs to the mix in small amounts, whisking all the time. Then sieve the flour, salt and spices and fold this into the mixture before finally adding the zests of the orange and lemon, the chopped nuts and the brandy soaked fruit.

Using the back of a large spoon, transfer the mix to the tin and smooth the top over. If you aren’t planning on icing the cake, top with the chopped almonds and cover with a sheet of parchment, with a 50p sized hole in the middle.

Place the tin on the bottom shelf for at least four and a half hours (it might take a little longer). Remove, cool on a wire rack and then make several holes in the top and base with a skewer to ‘feed’ the cake a couple of teaspoons of brandy.

Then wrap the finished cake in two layers of greaseproof paper and place in an airtight container. You might want to ‘feed’ more brandy a couple of times before the big day.

Winter driving tips

Given the severity of the last two winters, there is absolutely no excuse to be unprepared for snow and icy conditions this year. The advice from motoring and safety organisations is simple – unless you have to drive, don’t.

Of course though, this is easier said than done – sometimes, driving in treacherous conditions simply can’t be avoided. For example, there is nothing you can do if you’re hours from home when the weather turns. However, deciding to ‘pop out’ to the gym in the car when it’s sub-zero temperatures is not just stupid but potentially dangerous. Choosing to walk, take public transport or simply stay in all reduce or eradicate the risk of finding yourself in trouble.

So what about the times when you can’t avoid driving? Just remember the saying ‘prevention is better than cure’.

Tyres

In order to clear snow and water, you must have decent tread – the legal limit is 1.6mm, but 3mm is recommended for safe driving in the winter. Don’t be tempted to reduce your tyres’ air pressure as it actually reduces stability, which is the last thing you want when you’re driving on icy roads. You should consider fitting winter tyres if you often have to drive on rural roads.

Batteries

Today’s car batteries may provide more power but take longer to fully recharge, so require a regular run out in order to maintain optimum performance. Alternatively, if you don’t have time to do this, why not buy an ‘intelligent’ battery charger?

Top up with anti-freeze and screen wash

Anti-freeze only costs a few pounds but without it, your engine block could freeze and crack, which will cost hundreds to fix. If, when you start the car, you hear a continuous squealing noise, stop the engine immediately as your water pump and/or cylinder block may be frozen. It needs to thaw out, which could take several days unless you can move your car to a heated garage.

Ensure that your screen wash is of the proper concentration to prevent the water freezing in winter and check that your wiper blades aren’t worn or split.

Getting going

Make sure that you give yourself at least 15 extra minutes to get the car started and ready before you actually have to leave. Don’t even think about clearing windscreens or frozen locks with hot water as not only could you crack the screen, but all that will happen is that the water will refreeze.

Use a de-icer and ice scraper and don’t use your wipers to try to clear snow as this could damage the blades and/or burn out the motor. Ensure that you fully clear the front and rear windscreens before pulling away, as driving off with only a small space visible is not only dangerous, but also illegal.

Drive safely

Keep the wellies and stilettos at home or in the boot – wear dry, comfortable shoes when driving to ensure you have good tread on the pedals. Pull away in second gear and lift the clutch slowly to avoid wheel spin. Remember that stopping distances increase tenfold in icy and snowy conditions so drive slowly, manoeuvre gently and avoid sharp, sudden or hard braking.

Winter Essentials

If it looks like you may have to drive in potentially treacherous conditions, make sure that you have your winter essentials in the boot of the car:

· A fully charged mobile phone

· A SatNav or atlas

· A blanket, travel rug or sleeping bag

· A shovel

· Bits of carpet or thick carpet to put under your wheels to regain traction

· Salt or sand to clear snow or ice

· An ice scraper or de-icer

· A torch and batteries

· Car battery jump leads

· Bottled water and snacks

· Additional screen wash

· Warm clothes – a coat, jumper, gloves and a hat

· Any required medication and first aid kit

Diwali, or Deepavali, popularly known as the ‘festival of lights’ is just around the corner, with the five day Indian festival starting this Wednesday 26^th October 2011.

Diwali has major religious significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The third day of celebrations is the ‘festival of lights’, during which, Hindus light diyas (small clay lamps) in thire homes, shops and public places and exchange gifts.

Why buy a poppy this Remembrance Sunday?

This time of year, you will often see tins in shops, or people on the street selling poppies. Symbolic tokens in aid of the Royal British Legion. For many, buying them has become an automatic move, perhaps without thinking about what they mean.

First sold as real poppies in 1921, 10 years after the guns had fallen silent, the money raised was used to aid those injured in the First World War as well as using the symbols to commemorate the millions of dead.

The use of the poppy as a symbol was inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae – which contains the line ‘We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields’ because the poppy was the first thing to grow in the cratered earth.

A year later – in 1922 – the founder of The Disabled Society, which assisted those injured in The Great War, came up with the idea of injured ex-servicemen manufacturing replica poppies for sale in the build-up to Remembrance Day, and the poppies were designed specifically to be easy for them to assemble.

It’s a practice that continues to this day, now commemorating and supporting the injured of conflict through the Second World War to the present day.

Performing a vital service

In providing welfare for anyone associated with the Armed Forces, The Royal British Legion performs a vital service. Serving personnel, ex-service and their dependents can benefit from the welfare services they provide, and they also campaign on behalf of families on a variety of issues which affect those who are, or have been in active service.

As well as all this, they are the custodians of Remembrance and the Poppy appeal is their crucial fundraising activity, but you can also help out at their locations throughout the Lancashire area.

So when you think about whether to buy a poppy this year, take a moment to remember to fallen and help support our Armed Forces.

Ensure you and your family stay safe this Bonfire Night

Bonfire night is a great evening for families. Whether they have bought a box of fireworks from the local shops for the back garden, or are planning on attending a professional display, the bangs, whizzes, ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ can be heard across the country.

But amongst the fun and excitement, careless revellers contribute to the 1,000 or so injuries which require hospitalisation every time Bonfire Night comes around.

Most of these injuries are preventable simply by applying the rules as set out by the fireworks code.

Just as airlines request that even ‘seasoned travellers’ take a look at the safety card, it’s also sensible for anyone planning on hosting a firework display of their own to familiarise themselves with these safety tips. They could save you from injury, save your eyesight or even your life.

Keep fireworks in a closed box

Fireworks are essentially miniature explosive devices and you should always treat them as dangerous objects. Don’t leave them lying around where children or pets could pick them up, or where they could be struck by an errant spark. Keeping them in a sealed box, preferably a tin is the safest place.

Follow the instructions on each firework

All fireworks act in different ways and need to be secured or positioned to suit. Always read the directions on the firework itself – using a torch, NEVER a match or lighter – and follow them to the letter.

Light all fireworks at arm’s length

Fireworks can occasionally be duds and can also go off faster than you might expect. Ensure you always light the touch-paper with a gloved hand, and with your face away from the firework. Don’t lean over to get a better look.

Stand well back

Always make sure you are a least the minimum distance as described on the firework. Some will require you to be further away than others, or the firework may fall over. Keep your distance and stay safe.

Never go back to a lit firework, even if it looks like it’s not lit

If the firework you have just lit seems to have fizzled out, don’t take the risk. It may just be burning inside. Going over to peer down into the top, might be the last thing you see.

Never put fireworks in your pocket

Fireworks contain both explosive powder and other ingredients designed to burn in bright colours. Many of these are toxic to both humans and animals. Standing next to a fire with a pocket full of explosives isn’t a smart move. Neither is eating phosphorus laced treacle toffee.

Never throw fireworks

These aren’t grenades and you’re not in the trenches of the Somme. You are Lighting a firework and holding it in your hand could just as easily go off early and take a couple of fingers with it, as spray flames and sparks into someone’s face.

Keep pets inside

Not only are fireworks incredibly distressing for pets, they are also poisonous if dogs and cats find discarded cases or spent rockets. Keep pets indoors and prevent stress and illness.

Have fun, but stay safe, and follow the fireworks code.

Sadly, the current economic climate has forced many councils to scrimp and save in various ways, with contributions to local towns’ Christmas lights being one of the many ‘luxuries’ scrapped.

Thursday November 24^th 2011 is not only the time that Bolton’s Christmas lights are switched on, but it also marks the beginning of the town’s late night shopping, so why not go along to Victoria Square at 5pm to celebrate the start of the festive season?

If you live in or near Rawtenstall, Sunday 27^th November is a date to put in the diary, with the Christmas Lights switch on and Christmas fair, Clogs ont’ Cobbles. Bolton

The Red Lion Pub, Four Lane Ends, 1-3 Salford Road, Over Hulton, Bolton, is holding a fireworks display and family funfair on Friday 4^th November 2011. Starting at 5pm, the fireworks are being fired at 8:30pm, and there will be a DJ until late.

On Saturday 5^th November, Hollywood Road Sports and Social Club is hosting a Bigger and Better Firework Display from 7pm until 10pm. Tickets cost £3 per adult and £2 per child. Visitors will also enjoy a barbecue and sweet stall.

1. Set a limit on your spending

It’s very tempting to buy multiple presents for your loved ones – like a tube of Pringles, once you pop, you can’t stop! But ask yourself – does your 18 month old really need £200 worth of plastic and fluffy toys? Wouldn’t it be better to set a limit of, say, £50 and stick to it? You can still buy a quality present for £50, no matter how old the recipient, yet you won’t have spend the next six months trying to pay off your credit card.

2. Make your own gifts

You don’t have to a domestic god or goddess to make your own gifts. There are literally hundreds of different ideas and recipes that are perfect for a personal, homemade present, with food being a particular favourite.

Churchgate festival returns to town this weekend!

The ever popular festival is back this weekend, and is expected to draw crowds in to town from across the borough.

Bolton Parish Church will open its doors for concerts, prayers and tower tours on Saturday.

Due to cuts, the festival will be scaled down this year so will be missing some of the usual stalls and attractions, but the church will still have loads going on.

Ben Smith, Bolton schoolboy and pianist, is tipped to be a classical star of the future and he will be performing Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata.

Also performing will be Michael Pain, who will be playing two organ concerts of Bach and French music.

Tower tours will be running at 10am, 11.30am and 1pm. Ben Smith will perform at 11am and Michael Pain will play at 12.30pm and 2pm.

Visitors can also marvel at a fantastic collection of vintage and classic Rolls Royce and Bentley cars on display in the car park.

Bolton Hospice charity needs more goods for its shops and it's taking to the streets to collect your donations.

The charity van is out and about, making it easier for you to donate. Coming to accessible car parks near you, you can drop items off without the worry of parking or missing shop opening times.

Last Wednesday, the van was parked at Warings Accountants in Heaton and ended up two-thirds full.

So, riding high on their success, Bolton Hospice's charity van is out and about over the next few weeks. It can be found at the Reebok Stadium car park A on Wednesday 8th June from 8am until 9.30am and at Nisa, Crompton Way in Tonge Moore on Wednesday 15th June from 9am until 10.15am.

Get out of the rain and enjoy some of the many activities available in Bolton this May Half Term.

Bolton Museum has a host of activities on offer, all based on the theme of wildlife. You can join in the free nature trail or take part in one of the workshops organised.

On Tuesday 31st May and Friday 3rd June, there will be fishy crafts, inspired by the museum's aquarium. On Wednesday 1st June, you can create your own garden head-dress, with a session for under 5's from 10am until 12 noon and a session for the over 5's from 2pm until 4pm. On Thursday 2nd June from 10am until 3.30pm, a nature themed book bonanza gives children the opportunity to explore wildlife themed books along with free family fun activities. At the end of the week, there will be a garden creature mask-making session 2 - 3pm on Saturday 4th June.

Bolton Steam is opening from 10am until 4pm on Monday, where visitors have the opportunity to see rescued and restored steam engines.

Bolton Market is celebrating National Barbecue Week with a series of events and food tastings.

Hot on many people's agenda is the rising cost of fuel at the pumps but by changing how you drive you can get many more miles out of your tank!

It is said, that a whopping 33% can be saved off your weekly fuel bill, simply by learning to drive more economically. So, here's what you need to do!

First things first, make sure your car is in sound mechanical order and keep it serviced regularly; this will maintain an efficient engine.

Check local papers for information about where you can find the cheapest fuel day to day and whilst you're at the garage, always check your tyre pressure, as under-inflated tyres will cause more rolling resistance and use more fuel.

Don't carry anything that you don't need because extra weight uses extra fuel. And, if you're not using your roof bars, take them off - they only create extra drag.

Consider the journeys that you make and where possible, it pays to combine short trips as cold starts are inefficient. Perhaps you could combine, popping to the shop, dropping the kids off and going to the gym into one trip rather than thre.

An idle engine wastes fuel so don't start the engine until you are ready to leave.

Drive smoothly, accelerate and decelerate gently and avoid braking when you can.

Try to change gear without causing the engine to labour; it is recommended to change up a gear at around 2000rpm in a diesel car and around 2500rpm in a petrol car.

The faster you go, the more fuel you will use, so it pays to drive within the speed limit. Cruising along at 80mph can use a massive 25% more fuel than travelling at 70mph! And, driving at 70mph you will use up to 9% more fuel than driving at 60mph and 15% more than driving at 50mph.

Turn off any additional electrical uses, such as heated windscreens and headlights when they're not needed as they also increase fuel usage.

And finally, as we approach the summer, beware - air conditioning increases fuel consumption. If you are out driving at low to moderate speeds on a hot day around town, turn the air con off and wind down the window. At higher speeds the effects on efficiency are not so noticeable.

The Olympic flame is coming to Bolton!

Bolton has been chosen to host the Olympic flame as it tours the UK in the run up to London 2012.

The flame will arrive in Bolton on Thursday 31st May.

The Council are considering the route to be taken through the town and planning a spectacular evening celebration which it is thought will culminate in a cauldron being lit from the Olympic flame.

Bolton Olympian, Amir Khan said 'I know the Olympics are not actually coming to Bolton but it will be a historic day.'

The Olympic flame will arrive in the UK from Greece on Friday 18th May, where it will start its journey at Land's End, touring the UK and finally arriving at the Olympic Stadium on Friday 27th July 2012 for the opening ceremony of London 2012.

Nominations are open from 18th May until 30th June 2011 for members of the public to nominate someone they feel would be an inspirational torchbearer to carry the Olympic symbol on a leg of the flame's 8,000 mile, 70 day journey around the country.

Chairman of London 2012, Sebastian Coe said 'The Olympic flame will shine a light right across every nation and region of the UK and showcase the very best of who we are and where we live.'

Town centre roadworks are finished!

Town centre workers welcome an end to months of disruption as roadworks in Bolton town centre have now been completed, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The disruption in the town centre was caused by the £300,000 bridge maintenance work on Bank Street, which began on 14th February, upgrading the bridge and improving its safety.

Bank Street is one of Bolton's major routes and works have inconvenienced numerous town centre workers.

The road had already suffered disruption less than a year ago, when United Utilities closed the road for several weeks, causing rush hour gridlock for town centre traffic.

Other local works, resurfacing St. George's Road and building a new exit lane on Topp Way, have also been completed.

Bolton town centre traffic is now flowing much more freely!

Bolton market is an inspiration to the Danes!

Bolton market has been visited by delegates from Denmark hoping to recreate the success of the market in Copenhagen.

The delegates toured the stalls collecting ideas for a new indoor market being set up in the Danish capital later this year.

The visitors said 'Bolton market is a very good market which is for the wider population, there is so much variety...In Denmark we lost the market culture 50 or 60 years ago because people started going to shops and supermarkets...The market we are having is privately owned and operated but in a public square right in the centre of Copenhagen.'

Bolton market has enjoyed great success in the last few years, gaining the accolade Tourism Retailer of the Year at the Manchester Tourism Awards 2009 and being named Best Indoor Retail Market in 2010 by the National Associations of British Market Authorities.

Local Bromley Cross man played the fanfare at the Royal Wedding!

Musician Andrew Lofthouse, from Bromley Cross was one of the RAF Central Band members playing the fanfare as Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey.

Andrew was a Turton High School pupil before studying at the Royal Northern College of music in Manchester.

The band was situated in the chapel and joined the choirs and orchestra to perform Hubert Parry's setting of verses from Psalm 122, 'I was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord,' as Kate Middleton, the now Duchess of Cambridge, walked down the aisle.

Andrew said "It was great. It's not something that you would ever imagine doing, but it was exciting being part of an event like that - it really got the adrenaline flowing.

Bolton partied in style for the Royal Wedding!

All across Bolton, people were out to celebrate the Royal Wedding yesterday.

The marriage of the future King and Queen of Britain, Prince William and newly titled Princess Catherine was marked with hundreds of events across the town.

From small parties in people's homes and pubs celebrations to big official street parties, Boltonian's were out in force to enjoy the occasion!

The grandeur of the wedding at Westminster Abbey was watched by many on television and royalists flew the flags and strung out the bunting for street parties aplenty.

Over 100 people crammed into Portugal Street, where they have a long standing tradition of street parties and one resident described the scene; 'It is a beautiful street and it looks very nostalgic with all the bunting.'

The last minute Rivington Field street party was a huge success, with over 85 royal enthusiasts enjoying face painting, a bouncy castle and royal buffet.

Booth Road in Little Lever held village celebrations where about 100 residents joined in with decorative banners, dressing up, a bouncy castle and traditional English games.

Fifty residents in Chantry Close joined together for adults to toast the royal newlyweds whilst children played traditional games.

And many more parties were enjoyed across the town.

All in all a fabulous time was had by everyone. And the atmosphere of the occasion was summed up by one party goer who said; 'There are people who have been living side by side for 12 or 13 years without really speaking to each other and now we're all out in the street having a drink and a chat - it's great!'

Local film director's tribute to the Royal Wedding is proving a big hit!

A film producer from Bolton has collaborated with successful singing troupe Barbershopera to create a quirky tribute to the Royal Wedding.

Former Sharples High School and Turton Sixth Form student, Barry Pilling, joined the award winning comedy singers to make a video for their song entitled 'I could have married Kate.'

The song is about 4 would-be suitors (and a horse) expressing their heartache over Catherine Middleton choosing to marry Prince William and not them!

Mr Pilling said 'We wanted to do something topical...the Royal Wedding seemed just right...We didn't want to just jump on the bandwagon, we wanted to make something people would actually want to watch.'

Once the idea was finalised, it took just a week to shoot and release the film, which received over 15,000 hits in the first few days of being available online.

ATM safety is something everybody should know!

Crimestoppers recently published ATM safety information but it is so little known about that it rarely gets used.

Are you aware of the facility available at every ATM machine which enables you to notify the police immediately should you be forced to withdraw money against your will?

If you find yourself in the position of being forced by a thief to withdraw cash from an ATM machine, simply enter your PIN number in backwards. For instance, if your PIN number were 1234 then you would need to enter 4321.

The facility within the ATM will recognise that the number you have entered is a reversed sequence for that card. The machine will dispense the money that has been requested, so won't draw any suspicion or put you in further danger but will notify the police, enabling them to be dispatched to your location immediately.

The thief will remain completely unaware that you have informed the police until it is too late!

It is a requirement by law for all ATMs to operate this emergency sequencer facility, but so few people know about it that it is barely ever used.

Students at Bolton University face tuition fees of up to £8,400!

Bosses at Bolton University have announced the introduction of a three-band fee structure for all UK and EU full-time undergraduate students starting courses in September 2012.

Under the new fixed fee structure, fees will be charged at £6,300 for classroom based courses, £7,200 for studio based and resource intensive courses and £8,400 for specialist and laboratory courses.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr George Holmes, said, "We are not in the business of profiteering from students and their families and do not intend to require one group of students to subsidise the learning of others, hence our range of fixed fees."

Some students may be eligible for fee reductions up to £1,200 per year under the Government's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics funding. Also, in addition to government grants, Bolton University offer a range of scholarships to help offset the impact of fees on students' finances.

The government have stated that fees over £6,000 will only be acceptable in exceptional circumstances but average fees for universities across the UK for students starting courses in September 2012 will be £8,678.

Almost half of the universities in the UK have announced their tuition fees and 46 of those 67 universities want to charge the maximum £9,000 for all of their courses.

The Office of National Statistics state that graduates earn £12,000 more per year than non-graduates but British students are undoubtedly facing increasing financial hardships at the start of their careers!

Bolton could soon see the return of Greyhound racing

Campaigners are close to securing the return of Greyhound racing to Bolton.

It has been fifteen years since the Raikes Lane stadium in Bolton town centre closed and the Bolton Greyhound and Motor Sport Alliance have been campaigning for a new stadium in the town.

Campaigners have secured the backing of a greyhound stadium owner, a stock car impresario and a sponsor willing to pay £250,000 for naming rights of the new stadium. Now they just need a 12-acre site on which to build the stadium.

Chiefs at the town hall have said that they would be happy to work alongside the Alliance to secure a site.

The Alliance aim to build a 2,500 capacity stadium, rivalling Manchester's Belle Vue and it is thought the development would create an additional 200 jobs in the town.

Firstly, the international emergency number from a mobile phone is 112. If you encounter an emergency whilst you are out of network coverage, dial 112 and your phone will search to connect to any network available and establish the emergency number. Even if your phone is locked, this free service will work anywhere worldwide.

Did you know, if you lock your keys in the car, somebody with the spare key can open your car through their mobile phone! All you need to do is hold your phone close to your car door whilst the other person presses the spare key unlock button holding the key near to their phone and your car will unlock. You can be thousands of miles away and it will work!

Also very useful to know is the fact that every mobile phone stores a hidden battery power. When your phone battery is almost dead, press the keys *3370# and your phone will restart activating the extra power and displaying 50% power left. When you next charge your mobile, this hidden battery will also be re-charged.

And finally, if your phone is stolen, you can disable it, rendering it useless to the thief. For this you need to know your phone's serial number which you can find by typing *#06# into your handset, write down and keep the 15 digit unique code.

If your mobile phone does get stolen, all you need to do is contact your service provider and give them this unique serial number and they will be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the sim card, it will be useless. It doesn't get your phone back but it's nice to know that someone else can't use or sell it!

Bolton's 'parkies' are getting brighter!

Parking wardens in Bolton will soon be wearing newer, brighter uniforms as part of a bid to improve their service.

Street parking enforcement in Bolton has been delivered by Parking company NSL since 2005 and their contract has recently been renewed again.

Included in their bid for the contract was the proposal of new uniforms in an attempt to make their Civil Enforcement Officers more easily identifiable.

The company want drivers to see Civil Enforcement Officers as a point of contact to ask if they need directions or are unsure of parking regulations etc. The new uniforms will make them easy to spot.

A NSL spokesman says 'it is a change people will notice immediately.'

Also proposed in the new bid was the issuing of hand held computers to every Civil Enforcement Officer, which would incorporate an inbuilt camera, enabling them to make use of photographic evidence.

Beware the tax rebate scam in Bolton!

Trading Standards officers have issued warnings about a tax rebate scan happening in Bolton at the moment.

Bolton residents are being sent emails from fraudsters claiming that the individual is due a tax rebate. The emails appear to contain a genuine email address and links to the official website of Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs. However, trying to process the rebate will only respond to the fraudsters and give them financial and personal details.

The advice to residents who receive such an email is not to click on any links within the email, to run their anti-virus software and to forward the email to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk before deleting it.

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs never contact individuals requesting personal information.

So don't get caught out!

It's easy to forget and find yourself an hour late on the last Sunday of March, so don't get caught out!

At 1am on Sunday 27th March 2011, we set our clocks forward an hour and British Summer Time (BST) begins.

But why do we do it?

The notion of changing our clocks was initially voiced by Benjamin Franklin but the man truly responsible for British Summer Time is William Willett.

William recognised that hours of light on summer mornings was being wasted, and argued that by putting the clocks forward it could be better utilised in the afternoon.

William Willett campaigned his idea for years but it wasn't until 1916, a year after his death, that the Government passed the 'Summer Time Act', introducing daylight saving time to the UK during World War One.

The Act proved a success, resulting in a reduced demand for coal and creating a more effective working day.

BST is observed everywhere across Europe with the exception of Iceland, which remains on GMT all year round.

Here in the UK, BST starts on the last Sunday of March until we return to Greenwich Mean Time on the final Sunday of October.

Launched in Bolton on Monday, The Big Society is a National Citizen Service programme initiated by David Cameron.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club is one of just twelve organisations in the UK chosen to deliver the first stage of the programme. The club will be offering 270 places for young people to go on a fortnight trip, building teamwork and leadership skills before they return to their own communities and become involved with a 5 week long project aimed at improving their local areas.

The Prime Minister aims to increase the number of places available over the next few years, eventually making the scheme available to all 16 year olds.

Pilot programmes will begin in Bolton after the last of the GCSE exams and finish with National Citizen Service graduation ceremonies.

There may then be the opportunity for the graduates to get involved in and International Citizen Service, where 18-22 year olds can travel abroad helping to tackle poverty.

Tickets go on sale next week for Wanderers' semi-final game

Season ticket holders at Bolton Wanderers are guaranteed two tickets when the team head down to Wembley to face Stoke City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Tickets for the match go on sale on March 24th and with Wanderers being allocated 31,380 tickets, fans shouldn't be disappointed.

Priced at £30 - £60, most tickets will be for stadium levels one and five.

The game is set to kick off at 4pm on Sunday 17th April at London's Wembley Stadium. The Wanderers will be playing in their home kit and have drawn the West side of the stadium.

Special trains and subsidised coaches have been arranged by the club to help supporters make the journey down to London.

A Bolton firefighter is helping the search for survivors in Japan

Bolton man, Alex Sugden joined a team of UK firefighters flying out to Japan last weekend to help search for survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Based in one of the worst hit areas, Ofunato, the team began their search on Tuesday at 6am local time but have yet to find any survivors.

When the area search is completed, it is thought the UK firefighters will then be called on to help with demolishing some of the buildings most damaged by the eathquake activity.

After the explosion at the damaged nuclear plant, environmental radiation levels are being continuously monitored but the team are advised they are about 100km from the area at risk.

German artists, Kaspar Wimberley and Susanne Kudielka will be showcasing an old collection of animals housed at Rossendale Museum in a whole new light.

Working alongside the UK's best known authority on taxidermy, Pat Morris, the artists are taking X-rays of the museum's collection of stuffed animals.

Some of the smaller exhibits have been X-rayed locally but the larger animal displays will travel to Manchester to have the X-ray treatment at the Henry Moseley Imaging facility.

The research project is titled New Light on Old Bones and explores the differing ways natural history specimens can be used to engage and educate visitors, uncovering what can be found on the inside of the animals.

It's Pancake Day... how do you eat yours?

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday so the date changes yearly. This year it falls on Tuesday 8^th February.

So, we know they're scrummy but why do we eat pancakes?

The term Shrove derives from the old name Shrive, meaning to confess. In the Middle Ages, people would confess their sins to be forgiven before the start of Lent.

Marking the final day before Lent, a period of abstinence, Shrove Tuesday was traditionally the last chance to use up foods not allowed during Lent. Pancakes are eaten because they contain butter and eggs, forbidden foods during the Lent festival.

Follow our simple recipe and add your own imaginative fillings for your own perfect pancake day.

Pancake Batter Recipe:

110g (4oz) plain flour

Pinch of salt

2 large eggs

300 ml (10.5 fl oz) milk

50g (2oz) butter

Sift the flour and salt together in a large bowl.

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and break the eggs into it, whisking together.

Slowly whisk in the milk forming a smooth batter.

Heat the frying pan until really hot and add the butter until melted. Use 2 tablespoons of the melted butter to stir into the batter mixture, whisking well.

Save the remaining butter to use for oiling your pan.

Heat the pan on high, then turn the heat down to medium and coat your pan with some melted butter.

Pour enough batter mixture into the pan to thinly cover the base.

Swirl the pan around, spreading the batter evenly across the base of the pan.

Cook for 30 seconds, then loosen the edges of your pancake and either toss or turn it to cook the other side.

Then it is up to you to decide on your choice of filling - do you like yours savoury or sweet? The 'typical' way to eat a pancake is with lemon and sugar, but why not take the opportunity to get creative?

Footballer Gary Neville's 'Tellytubby' home has been given the green light!

Controversial plans for a home likened to the Tellytubbies has been approved by planning chiefs.

The former Manchester United player, Gary Neville's new home planned for his Harwood estate has been described as a pioneering innovation.

However, local residents have been campaigning against the proposed development since last January when it was first revealed to the public due to its appearance.

The distinctive family home will be the first zero-carbon property in the borough; the build will incorporate many eco-measures, including a wind turbine.

Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council, Paul King said; "The proposed house is one of exceptional, bespoke design and should be applauded for both its architectural merit and its technical innovation ... and will enable others to see the potential of marrying innovative design with low carbon living."

Bolton could see a blanket ban of public alcohol consumption

Bolton council's environmental scrutiny commitee has formally recommended that the drinking of alcohol should be banned in every street across Bolton.

If agreed, anybody caught boozing in public will have their alcohol confiscated by police officers. Anyone refusing to give up their drink would receive a £50 on the spot fine or arrested and taken through the courts for a fine of up to £500.

It is hoped that the ban will help to reduce anti-social drunken behaviour.

Drinking in public has already been banned in 8 areas of the town; Bolton town centre, Blackrod, Green Lane, Halliwell, Horwich, Little Lever, The Haulgh and Union Road. There has been a reduction of anti-social behaviour since these bans came into force. Now the scrutiny committee has recommended the ban be extended to cover the entire borough.

Bolton's most senior police officer, Chf. Supt. Steve Hartley said, "There is no single move that can solve the problem of anti-social behaviour, but this is one tool in the box that we can use to reduce it."

A similar ban is already being succesfully used in Wigan and committee members hope Bolton can follow their lead.

Councillor, Guy Harkin said, "I don't think there's any reason for drinking alcohol while walking around the streets - use licensed premises."

Charity hopes to convert a local derelict pub into a community centre to help people find work

Local charity, Heaton Unity Association has chosen The Church Inn building on Wigan Road for its proposed drop-in centre facility.

The 100 year old Church Inn closed last February after a drop in trade and the Heaton Unity Association wants to take on the property, with the plan to refurbish and build an extension.

The proposed centre would house offices for 4 members of staff, classrooms, a computer centre, a library, a prayer room, kitchen and dining room.

Heaton Unity Association aims to provide a drop-in facility for people to get careers advice. Local people would be able to access help with job searches and applications.

The centre would also be used to hold an after-school homework club, classes teaching cookery and English as a second language, a mums and tots group, youth group and healthcheck sessions.

The charity currently has many volunteers but no suitable location in which to base its activities.

Heaton Unity Association has applied for planning permision to change the use of the building. Local people are invited to give their opinions up until 11th March and the council will reach its decision by 13th April 2011.

Local radio station, Bolton FM faces possible closure unless Ofcom bends its rules.

The community radio station has been on air since June 2009 but due to the town's topography, the station's broadcasts cannot be accessed in all parts of the town.

Station bosses hope to install a new aerial near Horwich, enabling them to reach the residents who are unable to tune in.

Broadcasting watchdog, Ofcom states that the community license held by Bolton FM is for a maximum 5km radius from the broadcasting centre only, but bosses at the station argue this rule should not apply for a town as big as Bolton.

Bolton Council will be cutting i's grant funding as part of the wider cuts, leaving the station to cover the shortfall from the private sector.

Station chairman, Andrew Dickson said: "Not being able to broadcast into the north of Bolton is a huge barrier to gaining these extra revenues as it impacts on one of the busiest commercial areas of the town, Middlebrook, the home of Bolton Wanderes, the biggest retail offering for miles and a thriving night time economy."

The station is appealing for local residents to help their Ofcom application by sending a letter of support to Mr Dickson or Mr Williams at Bolton FM, Office No 6, Ashburner St, Bolton, BL1 1TQ.

Bolton residents are fuming about possible plans to build a supermarket in Little Lever!

Little Lever residents are sending their message loud and clear: 'We don't want a supermarket here!'

Over 50 local people attended a public meeting on Wednesday over fears that a major developer plans to build on the land in Lever Street previously occupied by Pennine Pets.

It is believed the development will be in the form of a major supermarket.

Residents are concerned that if these plans go ahead, the supermarket would have a negative impact on Little Lever businesses, reduce house prices and increase traffic in the area.

Local resident and meeting organiser, Kristy Atkinson commented, "I am quite passionate about where I live. My fear is Little Lever will lose its personal feel should this development go ahead."

Little Lever has a high pensioner population and fears are that a new supermarket would shut down the village centre, which serves as a lifeline for all of the community, but particularly the elderly, many of whom do not have cars.

Kristy Atkinson said, "Aggressive pricing by supermarkets has ruined the character of town centres all over the UK ... Closure of local shops would be a reality if this goes ahead."

Residents of Ainsworth Road have received letters offering to buy their houses. It is speculated that they would be demolished for the supermarket to be built.

At present, Bolton Council has not received any planning application for the land but it is believed the land owner is in negotiations with the developer.

Local school children and pensioners will soon see their bus fares rise

From April 3rd 2011, concessions for children and passengers over 60 will be scrapped.

The region's public transport is run by Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority, who will be scrapping several concessions due to the Government's budget cuts.

The cuts will impact on young people from 5 to 16 years of age and students who are currently able to use a GMPTE pass to travel back and forth from college. OAPs and some disabled passengers will also be affected if travelling before 9.30am during the week.

Children currently pay an 80 pence flat fare, but this will be changing to half an adult fare.

Those over 60 will still travel free after 9.30am but will have to pay an normal adult fare if travelling on weekdays before 9.30am.

David Chadwick, Labour Councillor said "We are trying to help vulnerable and poorer people out but this has been forced upon us and we are having to make cuts."

Our gorgeous Bolton firefighters have been setting hearts alight as they raise money for charity.

Taking time out from fighting fires, the firefighters from Bolton Central Fire Station have been getting into the Valentine's spirit and swapping kisses for donations!

The lucky shoppers and workers each donated £1 in exchange for a saucy kiss.

All money raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

High winds caused chaos on the M60

Motorists found themselves in chaos on the M60 on Monday as winds of up to 60 mph overturned a lorry near the Trafford Centre.

The lorry was blown over in the high winds travelling over Barton Bridge this morning.

The accident closed the M60 clockwise from junction 9 and anti clockwise over the Barton Bridge, causing tailbacks over 4 miles long.

Police were advising motorists to avoid travelling in the area due to the especially high winds.

The motorway wasn't able to be re-opened until after 4pm, impacting on the already heavy rush hour traffic today.

The driver of the lorry was taken to hospital suffering minor injuries.

The M60 is now open as usual.

Almost one in ten eateries in Bolton need to improve!

Bolton Council is one of the first in the country to introduce a new system of grading local eateries on their hygiene.

Restaurants, take aways, cafes and any food serving business in Bolton are being inspected and given a rating, with zero being the worst and five being the best.

The inspection results are then made public to view on the Food Standards Agency website.

Many of the town's most popular restaurants and take aways have been told they must make major improvements to their hygiene standards.

If an inspection deems a kitchen to pose an imminent risk to the public, Bolton Council has the power to shut down the premises and prosecute the owners.

Four Bolton business have been given a zero rating, meaning 'urgent 'and 137 businesses received a rating of one, meaning 'major improvements needed'.

Inspections are regularly carried out at 6 monthly intervals to poor scoring businesses, yearly to those businesses that are doing well and every 18 months to the businesses showing the highest standards.

Every time a premises is inspected, it will be given a new rating.

In Bolton, 394 businesses scored a four, which is 'good' and 595 scored the highest possible score of five.

Following their inspection, the businesses are given a certificate, though it is not compulsory for this to be displayed.

Local folk band may be going back to the recording studio to pay tribute to local legend, Nat Lofthouse

One of Lancashire's most famous folk bands, The Houghton Weavers, are hoping to re-record a song first performed over 20 years ago to pay tribute to the Wanderers legend, Nat Lofthouse.

The song, named Lion of Vienna, which was written and first performed more than 20 years ago, was played on Monday at the Bolton Wanderers match against Chelsea and on Wednesday at the funeral of the Wanderers legend.

The song has proven to be very popular and is now thought could be a fantastic lasting tribute to Nat Lofthouse.

If the band receives enough public support, they plan to return to the recording studio to record a more up to date version of the song. It is hoped that funds raised from the sale could go towards a statue of the legend at the Reebok stadium.

Over 1,000 council jobs face the axe!

In line with the current cuts being made by the coalition government, Bolton Council is having to save £60 million over the next two years. This equates to 25% of the council's total budget.

In excess of 1,000 council council employees and now set to lose their jobs. 293 people will be made redundant before April this year and it is then estimated that a further 600 to 1,000 jobs will be at risk over the next twelve months.

The council's chief executive has written to all council employees apart from those working in schools, offering them the opportunity to take early retirement or voluntary redundancy.

Details of where most of the cuts and job losses will fall are expected next week.

A fantastic scheme using your old appliances is being piloted at the Hurstwood Court Household Waste Recycling Centre in Bolton

The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority has launched a six month pilot, which will be managed by the charity and social enterprise, CREATE.

The aim of the project is to recycle old, unwanted electrical white goods such as washing machines, tumble driers, ovens and fridges, making them accessible to people who really need them.

CREATE will be making regular collections of the white goods, then taking them to their depot where the appliances get tested and refurbished before being sold to members of the community, along with a 12 month waranty.

Last year, Greater Manchester scrapped over 13,000 tonnes of electrical goods. If this scheme proves successful and can be sustained long term, it will go a long way towards helping achieve the aim of zero waste.

The project will also be of huge benefit to low income members of the community, providing low cost, good quality items.

Bolton is fifth from bottom for recycling rates in the North West!

A recent publication has revealed that Bolton recycles only 29.1 per cent of its rubbish, making it one of the worst towns for recycling rates within the North West.

In the tables, Cheshire East was highest, recycling 49.5 % of their waste and Manchester came bottom, recycling just 18.8 %.

Town hall chiefs are keen to boost recycling rates in the town and will be running a campaign aimed at helping residents to recycle more of their household waste. Over 9,000 properties will be contacted and many schools and community centres visited, to give information on what can and cannot be recycled as well as information on curbside recycling dates. They will also be offering recycling bins and containers to those who do not already have one.

Council officers are asking residents for their help to increase recycling rates, as well as minimise waste.

Waste dumped in landfill sites is both bad for the environment and bad for the local economy. Landfill currently costs approximately £1 billion per year, which the public pays for via council tax. This is set to increase with the planned rise in landfill tax from £48 per ton to £80 per ton by 2014.

New Travelodge hotel comes to Bolton!

Bolton has welcomed new private investment in the town as building work starts for a new hotel.

The Travelodge group is investing £3 million in a new hotel in the town centre, located in the new look Merchants Quarter.

This is the first such investment the town has seen since the start of the recession and it is hoped such a show of confidence in Bolton will encourage further investment in the town.

Building work has begun on the new Travelodge and it is hoped the work will finish by the end of October.

The new hotel, situated on River Street, will create twelve new jobs when it opens. It is also expected to bring more visitors to the area and encourage those visitors to stay longer, which will greatly benefit the local economy, particularly Bolton's retailers.

Bolton school set to get a new £12 million campus

Plans to build a brand new school campus at Kearsley Academy in Bolton have been given the go ahead.

Surviving the extreme cuts being made by the current coalition government, Kearsley Acadamy is on track for a £12 million new school and sixth form campus, which is planned for opening in September 2012.

There were concerns that the plans would be scrapped, particularly after the government axed the Building Schools for the Future Scheme.

The Academy was opened last September and will open a sixth form this September. Currently occupying the old George Tomlinson School site, the buildings are worn and date back to the 1950's. The new campus will be built on the current site and will provide purpose built facilities.

Although £4 million less than first hoped, the re-build will provide vast improvements to learning opportunities for current and future pupils, as well as provide new facilities for the community.

Shoppers in our region are still enjoying the January sales, despite the VAT rise

After the extreme December weather led to disappointing sales for many of the region's high street stores in the run up to Christmas, retail outlets have enjoyed a busy week to kickstart 2011.

Shoppers hitting the high streets in the finer weather and to beat the VAT increase led to a bumper weekend for many shops in the region.

With shoppers encouraged out by sales aplenty, town centres in the North West and Great Britain as a whole, are enjoying renewed confidence.

The VAT increase from 17.5% to 20% was expected to have quite an impact on retail figures; however many shops and businesses are promising to absorb the increase through special offers and sales rather than increase their prices.

Hit notably harder by the VAT rise has been fuel prices. Local garage forecourts were packed on Bank Holiday Monday in advance of the almost 3 pence per litre increase at midnight.

It is estimated that most families can expect to pay around £400 a year extra on their fuel bills due to the VAT increase.

Cancelled bin collections in Bolton

Cancellations of rubbish and recycling collections in Bolton could continue into next week due to icy weather.

Freezing conditions have made it impossible for rubbish bin wagons to operate in Bolton this week and the suspension looks possible to continue into next week as well.

Chiefs at the Town Hall will be making the decision to postpone or resume collections on a daily basis. Officials hope the bin wagons will be able to return to their collection rounds but emergency collection points are already in place for the week.

Emergency collection points have been used successfully in the past when curb side collections have been cancelled and it is hoped this year will prove equally successful.

Council bosses have pledged more staff to assist in clearing the build up after Christmas.

Snow wreaks havoc in the North West!

What was set to be the busiest weekend of the year for local shops and businesses turned into big disappointment as the big freeze hit Lancashire.

Plummeting temperatures and blizzard conditions resulted in closure of some of the region’s roads and chaos at airports and on rail networks. Traditionally the busiest weekend of the year for travel and shopping, many travellers are finding themselves unable to make their journey.

Motorists in the North West have been advised by the Highways Authority only to travel if absolutely necessary.

The impact on the region’s High Streets has been huge. Many retailers expect to make as much as 60% of their annual revenue in the run up to Christmas but the recent deluge of snow has resulted in a significant reduction in footfall.

Having experienced a loss of trade several weeks ago during the previous big freeze, retailers were reportedly enjoying a rejuvenation of trade. However, the latest snow and ice has turned what was expected to be the peak weekend for Christmas sales into empty town centres. Blackburn reportedly experienced a 12% reduction in expected sales and across the region it is estimated that the impact on custom, import and export resulted in the loss of approximately £6 million.

Local retailers are hopeful that with another few days before Christmas, there is still time to make up for lost sales.

Keep your distance – it takes 10 times longer to stop in ice and snow than dry conditions.

Make all manoeuvres as gentle as possible – with little or no grip on the road, a sharp steer can easily turn into a spin.

Apply brakes as gently as possible and if the car starts to skid, release them and de-clutch.

Try not to stop on a hill. Keep your distance from the car in front to avoid braking. When climbing uphill try to keep your speed constant and select a suitable gear before the incline starts to avoid changing down on the hill. For downhill driving, keep to a low gear.

Town Hall needs to slash council budget

Following a comprehensive spending review, chiefs at the Bolton Town Hall have the challenge of making £36 million worth of cuts to the budget by the end of April 2011.

Having already planned £15 million cuts to Bolton council's budget by for the next financial year, chiefs are now having to make further cuts following the loss of grants totalling £19 million.

It is unclear yet as to which areas will be affected most; however it seems cuts of these proportions are sure to have quite an impact.

Coronation Street tram crash draws record number of viewers

A record number of viewers tuned in to Monday night's episode of Coronation Street as a tram careered off a viaduct and crashed into the Weatherfield street.

Over 15 million people watched in horror last night as a Metrolink tram smashed into The Kabin newsagent on Coronation Street, spreading chaos across the cobbles and leaving fans on the edge of their seat with a cliffhanger ending.

Much loved local characters such as Rita Sullivan and Ken Barlow were seen lying motionless in the final scenes of last night's episode, which cost ITV over £1 million to produce.

Setting the tone for the week ahead, the popular North West based soap celebrates fifty year of broadcasting this week with high drama, suspense and a special live episode on Thursday evening.

William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in the soap, explained how he was reduced to tears during a preview screening: "I had tears of pride to belong to a team that can produce something like that - which is not only the best thing in Coronation Street ever, the best thing on TV ever."

Meet Father Christmas across Lancashire this Christmas

Father Christmas will be flying across Lancashire throughout December, stopping off to meet local families at various locations across the region.

Farmer Parrs Animal World will be playing host to Santa and his reindeers from now until Christmas Eve from 10am until 5pm each day, offering local kids the chance to meet Father Christmas and feed his reindeer in the Winter Wonderland surroundings.

Father Christmas will be moving into his Magical Tree House at Ribby Hall until he sets off on Christmas Eve.

Appearing ever Saturday from 9:45am until Christmas, local families can meet Santa and receive a special gift from the man himself.

The Santa Special Steam Train will be setting off from Ribble Steam Railway in Preston throughout December.

Winding its way along a breathtaking route through the countryside, the train ride includes a special visit from Santa himself, as well as seasonal refreshments and mince pies.

And last, but not least, you can give two of Santa's reindeers a well earned pat on the back at Old Holly Farm where they will be staying until they set off around the world on Christmas Eve.
